In using language, we have the ability to cause change in the world – to evoke
emotion, to shift perception, to make or break connections. Apologising is a key
strategy for restoring or maintaining balance in our relationships, and this is
particularly true when you are a student apologising for not having completed your
academic duties.
In this talk, I will explore strategies used by Australian learners of Italian to apologise
to their teachers via email. This investigation will consider the learners’ use of
Italian in comparison to native speakers of Italian and native speakers of Australian
English, and comment on some key cross-cultural differences between these groups.
